City of Mesquite Solid Waste workers will begin distributing approximately 10,000 green recycling bins starting on August 22, 2008 as part of a new pilot program.

The bins will be placed in selected neighborhoods covering about one-third of the city. The bins will then be monitored to see what effect they have on recycling participation.

Recycling bins are being provided for free in the hopes that those who choose not to purchase blue recycling bags may opt to take part in recycling if they had a cheaper option.

If participation increases enough, then money made from selling the recycled materials would be used to purchase more bins to expand the program throughout the city.
