How do I place a hold?

You can place a hold in person at the information desk, by telephone, or through our online catalog. You will need to have your name, phone number, and library card number handy. If you are using our online catalog, you will also need your PIN.


How do I place a hold online?

If you find the item that you are looking for and it says no copies are currently available, click on the blue Details button.
On the left side of the screen, under the cover picture, click on the words Place Hold.
This screen appears:
Enter your library card number in the User ID space, and your PIN in the PIN space. Pull down the Pickup at: menu to select which location you want to pick the item up at. If there is a date after which you do not want the item, you can enter it in the Expiration date: space (for example, if the book is for a school assignment, or a book club meeting.)

How many holds can I place?

There is no limit to the number of holds you place at a time.


Is there a charge for placing a hold?

This service is free of charge.


How long is a hold held?

After we notify you that your item is available, it will be held at the checkout desk for 3 days. If it has not been picked up within that time, it will either pass to the next person on the waiting list or be returned to the shelf.


How do I have an item sent to another Library location?

When you place the hold, you can specify which library location you wish to pick it up at.


How do I know when my item is ready for me to pick up?

You will be contacted by telephone or email when the item is ready to be picked up.


I’m being told that my hold is being blocked. Why does that happen?

Your library card may be blocked if:
*There are overdue fines totalling $5.00 or more
*There are unpaid fines totalling $5.00 or more
*Your card is expired
You may also get an error if you try to place a hold on an item that is already on your hold list.


I tried to place a hold online, but got a message saying that no items qualified for hold. What can I do?

This message can appear if there is a copy of the title that is not checked out. If there is a copy currently on the shelf, you cannot place a hold online. In this case, you can ask a reference librarian to place the hold for you.


I tried to place a hold, but got a message saying that I couldn’t put a hold on an item from the other branch.
What does that mean?

This message can appear if there is a copy of the title that is not showing up in the catalog but is in the database. This could be a copy that is in the process of being cataloged and is not yet available, or a copy that is long overdue and considered lost. In this case, please ask a reference librarian to place the hold for you.


How can I see what titles I’ve put on hold?

Use My Account in our online catalog. Select Review My Account and then enter your library card number and PIN to log in. First you will see a list of the items you currently have checked out on your card, and beneath that is the list of everything you currently have on hold.


Can I cancel a hold?

Yes. Use My Account in our online catalog. Select Review My Account and then enter your library card number and PIN to log in. Click on the check box for each title you want to cancel and then click on the Cancel selected holds button at the bottom of the list.


Can I send someone else to pick up my hold?

You can, but since the hold was made on your library card, you will need to make sure that the person who is picking up your item has your library card in their possession.
