DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF POSITIONS IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, ALL APPLICANTS MUST UNDERGO AN EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION AS PART OF THE HIRING PROCESS TO WORK FOR THE MESQUITE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
A Public Safety Dispatcher will provide a variety of specialized and routine tasks in the provision of emergency and non-emergency communication services. They answer emergency and non-emergency calls for the Police and Fire Departments. They also provide emergency dispatch services for the Police and Fire Departments for the City of Mesquite.
Dispatchers will begin at $14 per hour. As you progress through training, your pay will increase with each new skill learned. In as little as 9 months, your earning potential can reach $15.75 per hour!
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED on hire date.
- No experience required.
- Must possess a valid Class C Texas driver's license.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, which will include working all shifts, weekends and holidays as needed.
- Must have the ability to remain calm and use good judgment while communicating over the phone with persons in highly stressful situations.
- Must have the knowledge, skill and ability to multitask and navigate several specialized computer screens at one time.
TESTING REQUIRED: The following test must be completed prior to the position closing in order to receive consideration for this position and move forward in the process:

ORIENTATION: Applicants who pass the testing will be notified of the orientation date. Orientation will be a short period of time for applicants to gain a better understanding of the job, submit necessary background paperwork, and listen to and ask questions of current dispatchers from the Mesquite Police Department. Applicants who pass testing must attend this orientation to continue in the selection process.
