ArcIMS Help


The ArcIMS Interactive Map interface provides the user with a number of tools to view, select, and search geographic data. These tools allow the user to zoom in or out, pan, measure, select, find, create custom map views, buffer or query spatial features and their database attributes.

Click on the Toolbar Text to view the description.


Toggle Legend and Layerlist

DESCRIPTION

The Layer/Legend List button toggles between the layer listing and the map legend. The default is to display the Layer List.

HOW IT WORKS

The Layer List allows you to select, which map layers are visible and which layer is active at any given time. If under the visible column the square box is unchecked, then that particular layer will not be displayed with the other map features and therefore can not be used as an active layer.

Another facet of this button is the active layer function; this is required for feature selection and identification. The Active layer must be selected prior to utilizing the functionality of the Identify, Query, Find, Buffer, Select by Rectangle and Select by Line/Polygon button tools. The active Layer is selected by clicking on the round box adjacent to one of the listed layers. Only one map layer can be active at any given time. When making any modifications to the Layer List, click the "Refresh Map" button to redraw the updated map. The layer list may change as you zoom in and out.

Toggle Overview Map

DESCRIPTION

The Overview Map On/Off button allows you to toggle the overview map. The default is to display the overview map.

HOW IT WORKS

The overview map indicates the section of the map you are currently viewing relative to the full extent of the map. It also allows you to quickly move around the map by clicking areas inside the overview map window.

Zoom In

DESCRIPTION

The Zoom In button will enable you to move in closer into a specific area.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on a location or click and drag the mouse to draw a box to zoom in.

Zoom Out

DESCRIPTION

The Zoom Out button will bring you out of a specific area.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on a location or click and drag the mouse to draw a box to zoom out.

Zoom to Full Extent

DESCRIPTION

The Zoom to Full Extent button allows you to quickly zoom out to the full extent of all the map layers in the current window.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the Zoom to Full Extent button to revert back to display initial map extent.

Zoom to Active Layer

DESCRIPTION

The Zoom to Active Layer button allows you to zoom out to the full extent of the currently active layer, which is selected within the Legend/Layer List button.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the Zoom to Full Extent button and it zooms to full extent of the active map layer.

Zoom to Last Extent

DESCRIPTION

The Zoom to Previous Extent button allows you to return to your previous zoom or panned level.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the "Zoom to Previous Extent" button to revert back to display the previously selected map extent.

Pan

DESCRIPTION

The Pan button will allow you to move around within the current map window in any direction.

HOW IT WORKS

Once you make this the active button move to the area on the map you want to start panning from and press/hold down with you index finger on the mouse button to move the map around. Release the mouse button to redraw the map at the new position. Continue the process until you get to your desired area.

Pan to North
P>DESCRIPTION

The Pan North button will only allow you to move north/up on the map.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the "Pan North" button and the map moves north.

Pan to South
DESCRIPTION

The Pan South button will only allow you to move south/down on the map.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the "Pan South" button and the map moves south.

Pan to West
DESCRIPTION

The Pan West button will only allow you to move west/left on the map.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the "Pan West" button and the map moves west.

Pan to East
DESCRIPTION

The Pan East button will only allow you to move east/right on the map.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the "Pan East" button and the map moves east.

Hyperlink
DESCRIPTION

The Hyperlink button will allow you to display additional information related to a specific feature.

HOW IT WORKS

In order for the the hyperlink button to work hyperlinks will need to be defined on a specific layer(DCAD Parcels). When a hyperlink has been defined the results will be either be displayed as a document or a new web page.

Identify
DESCRIPTION

The Identify button allows you to obtain additional attribute information about any feature within the map display area.

HOW IT WORKS

Zoom in to an area on the map (zooming into an area ensures you choose the right target).


Select a layer, and make it active by clicking its "active" radio button under the Layers list on the right side of the viewer.


Click the map feature, the data then is shown in the data table below the map.


Query
DESCRIPTION

The Query button will allow you to query for both string and numeric fields on the active theme within the map.

Find
DESCRIPTION

The Find button will allow you to locate information based on a character string. If you don’t know the complete string, a partial string may be entered.

Measure
DESCRIPTION

The Measure button allows you to measure distances.

HOW IT WORKS

Select an area you want to measure within the map display area.

Click on the measure button and select a starting point by right clicking the mouse button. Move the mouse pointer to the destination point and click the mouse button again. The distance will be displayed on the map in the Total: box, which gives you a grand total of all segments, and a Segment: box, which gives you the distance of the last segment. Make sure you use the Set Units button first to set the appropriate map units. When you are finished you can use the Clear Selection button to get rid of the arcs on the map.


Set Units
DESCRIPTION

The Set Units button allows you to select the reported units of measurement for the map. This affects the map scalebar and the Measure tool

HOW IT WORKS
Once you select the Set Units button a dialog box appears at the bottom of the map page. You have a choice of feet, miles, meters and kilometers. After you have selected your choice, click on Set Units to activate the setting.
Buffer
DESCRIPTION

The Buffer button will allow you to select adjacent information based on the selected feature and a specific buffer distance.

Select by Rectangle
DESCRIPTION

The Select by Rectangle button allows you to select features interactively.

Select by Line/ Polygon
DESCRIPTION

The Select by Line/Polygon button allow you to select features interactively.

Clear Selection
DESCRIPTION

The Clear Selection button clears the currently selected features and any output from the utilization of the Measure button.

HOW IT WORKS

Click the "Clear Selection" button to clear any selections made.

Geocode
DESCRIPTION

The Locate Address button allows you to geocode city addresses.

HOW IT WORKS

Click on the "Locate Address" button and enter a city address on the new window that is showing up on your screen. You should enter the street number first and then street name in upper case just like the default example 711 N GALLOWAY which is the city Municipal Center address. After you have entered your address click on the button.

The Locate Table Results associated with the matching addresses will appear in the text display area. This table will show you a list with so called address match candidates or all the matching addresses with their geocoding score. At this time you can select a specific record by moving the mouse cursor over the number which is located under the field/column called Rec or #. You know you are in the correct field/column because you will see the cursor turn into a pointing hand. When the record is selected the web page will zoom in and place a red star at the selected matching address.

At the end you have an option to go back to the original find address window by clicking on the button.

Print
DESCRIPTION

The Print button allows you to generate a full-page map in another browser window suitable for printing.

HOW IT WORKS
  • When you click on the print button a dialog interface located near the bottom of the web page called the text display area will apear.

  • Under Title to dsiplay on Map: you can enter a title for your map.

  • After you have entered the title click on "Create Print Page". A new browser window will appear with the full-page map inside. Then, from the new browser window, click File -> Print.
