The Measure button allows you to measure distances. Within the map display area select an area you want to measure. Click on the measure button and select a starting point by right clicking the mouse button. Move the mouse pointer to the destination point and click the mouse button again. The distance will be displayed on the map in the Total: box, which gives you a grand total of all segments, and a Segment: box, which gives you the distance of the last segment. Make sure you use the Set Units button first to set the appropriate map units. When you are finished you can use the Clear Selection  button to get rid of the arcs on the map.
