City Council Redistricting
2011

Article IV, §4a of the City Charter requires a triennial review of the four City Council district boundaries with a goal to preserve and maintain the equal apportionment of citizens. The City Council has examined the population of the four existing Council districts according to data obtained through the 2010 United States Decennial Census and finds that it is necessary and proper to make adjustments to the boundaries of the districts to achieve that goal.

The law requires that the most populated and least populated districts shall not vary by more than 10 percent. The current City Council districts vary by as much as 19.92 percent. The ordinance under consideration on Monday, November 21, will make adjustments to the district boundaries so that the maximum variation is reduced to 3.95 percent. If the ordinance is approved, some residents will be assigned to a different district and their City Council representative will change.

The public hearing affords every citizen or group the opportunity to address the Council on the impact of the new boundaries or other issues related to apportionment.
